The story of Marañon cacao as we know it today - famously one of Peru's most sought after origins - begins with the story of the late Anthony Bordein when he Erik Rupert travelled to Peru in search of the legendary white cacao bean; A journey which lead them to the Marañon Valley in Cajamarca. Since then, the popularity and demand of cacao from there has exploded, however the real story of Marañon cacao goes much further into the past, and in truth it holds significant historical evidence about the domestication of cacao, and its importance in modern human history.

JOE'S UNCLE'S FARM IN LA QUEMAZON

Here we can see the incredible ancient genetics Piura is home to. Pods that are different shades of brown are extremely scarce, even within Piura itsself. Joe said the trees on this farm are estimated to be around 300 years old as it has been in his family for generations. The plantation is very small, but its a core part of the cacao history in the area.
