THE CHOCOLATE:
Farmed by the amazing Qori Warmi (Women of Gold) Co-op nestled deep within the region of VRAEM, the Bellavista bean is a selectively bred native variety featuring a punchy aromatic flavour profile. With the goal of a better future for women, and a poverty to prosperity motto, there is ample reason to support the cause and the beautiful cacao.
VRAE was never a popular region for growing cacao. In the past it has always been considered a dangerous area to travel to, due to the nature of coca leaf production. During more recent years however, the tide has begun to change and it is now becoming a powerhouse for floral & fruity cacao production. Heavy investment from the government and outside sources lead research projects into developing VRAE’s own branch of cacao. After many years of selective breeding native cacaos from the jungle (cross breeding with modern hybrids in pursuit of floral characteristics) two VRAE’s were chosen; VRAE 15 & VRAE 99, with the later becoming more popular by chocolate makers around the world.
Qori Warmi co-op have gone one step further, choosing to work with a cacao now known as Bellavista, a selectively bred a descendent of VRAE 99. It has the potent fruitiness that VRAE 99 has, with extra complexity in floral notes.
Working with the Qori Warmi Co-op, we’re supporting not only exceptional cacao but also a great story — one of empowering communities in crisis and uplifting women to do more than remain at home.
